Flo, officially the Socialist Federation of Flo, is a constitutional republic located in the south-west of Morhir. Flo is known for its diplomatic efforts throughout the isles, such as its attempts to maintain peace between True North and the former SWR, as well as its commitments to self-determination by working to ensure the independence of Topia, Vulkanberge, Komunov and various other countries and territories.

Names and Terminology

The official name of the country is the Socialist Federation of Flo. In Flonish, also known as Flotian in the southern isles, this is written as the Sosialístika Bund Flo, in Flonish Cyrillic, this is written as the Сосиали’стика Бунд Фло and in the Flonish Gothic alphabet, it is written as the 𐍃𐍉𐍃𐌹𐌰𐌻𐌹’𐍃𐍊𐌹𐌺𐌰 𐌱𐌿𐌽𐌳 𐍆𐌻𐍉.

Before the 1st of July 2024, the official name of the country was the Socialist Republic of Flo. In Flonish, this was written as the Sosialístika Liuþwald Flo, in Flonish Cyrillic, this is written as Сосиали’стика Лиуҫўалд Фло and in the Flonish Gothic alphabet, it was written as the 𐍃𐍉𐍃𐌹𐌰𐌻𐌹’𐍃𐍊𐌹𐌺𐌰 𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌸𐍅𐌰𐌻𐌳 𐍆𐌻𐍉.

The people of Flo go by a couple of names depending on language and region. In northern Flonian English, the most common term used is Floner which originates from Flo’s language, and in southern Flonian English, the most common term is Flotian which originates from Comnasium’s language. Depending on the aforementioned regions, the name of Flo’s language and the adjective denoting relation to Flo is Flonish or Flotian.

The origins of the name "Flo" begin with the arrival of the first people who would later become the Floners. These people, composed of several Eastern Germanic groups, also brought their similar languages. Two candidates for the origin of the word Flo have been given by linguists; the first is Proto-Germanic *flutōną which meant “to float” and was likely reinforced by Old Norse flota and Old French floter, and the second is Proto-Germanic *flōaną which meant “to flow” and which was likely reinforced by Old Norse flóa.

Linguists generally agree that the former root is actually the origin of the word, with the loss of the ‘t’ being attributed to a rebracketing thanks to its inclusion in the regional name Flotopia. This consensus has been reached due to the lack of the latter word’s long ‘ō’ as well as being evidenced by the Southern Flonian demonym Flotian.
