The people of Flo go by a couple of names depending on language and region. Depending on the aforementioned regions, the name of Flo’s language and the adjective denoting relation to Flo is ''Flonish'' or ''Flotian''.

The origins of the name "Flo" begin with the arrival of the first people who would later become the [[Floners]]. These people, composed of several Eastern Germanic groups, also brought their similar languages. Two candidates for the origin of the word Flo have been given by linguists; the first is Proto-Germanic ''*flutōną'' which meant “to float” and was likely reinforced by Old Norse ''flota'' and Old French ''floter'', and the second is Proto-Germanic ''*flōaną'' which meant “to flow” and which was likely reinforced by Old Norse ''flóa''.
